Republican Local History Museum

The Republican Local History Museum was founded in 1918. It is the oldest cultural institution in the Altai Republic. Unique collections of the first Altai students of local history (son and father Gulyaevs), archeological materials from the excavations of burial mound Ak-Alakh and Plateau Ukok are displayed in the museum.

The most valuable and interesting exhibits are three writing monuments of Turkic peoples. They are quite unique and contain five runic inscriptions written in ancient Turkic language.

There is the whole exhibition hall devoted to Russian population of old believers from Mountain Altai and history of some origin peoples.

There is a great collection of paintings by Altai artists of different periods from Choros-Gurkin to our contemporaries.
