Katunsky Mountain Range

The mountain range is situated in Central Altai in the territory of Altai Republic. The length is 150 km, the highest point is mountain Belukha (4506 m). It’s the highest mountain range of Altai and most of the range is at a height not less than 4000 m and it is 3200-3500 m above the sea-level. It’s a natural borderline between Russia and Kazakhstan. The peaks of the mountain range correspond to alpine ones – pointed peaks with everlasting snow and steep slopes.  At a height 2000-2200 m you can meet larches and cedar pine trees, higher – only meadows, rocks and screes.

On the slopes of the mountain range there are about 386 glaciers with the total area 279 km2. Moreover, the Katun River originates in glacier Gebler. Also you can observe numerous mountain lakes and settlements of old-believers at the foot of the mountain range.
