It is the highest peak in Siberia, 4506 m above the sea level and the main peak of the Katunsky Mountain Range in central Altai. Being remote from three oceans – the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean - in equal proportions, it became the main mountain peak of Central Asia.
The climate in the region is rather severe with long cold winters and short rainy or snowy summers. The average temperature on the border of forest and mountain in July is 8, 3 ˚ C, as for the peaks, it’s about 6, 3 ˚ C. It is not a surprise to have -20˚ C of frost even in summer.
On the slopes of Belukha and its valleys there are 169 glaciers with the total area about 150 km2.
Belukha constantly attracts the attention of mountain climbers. In spite of the fact that every year it is visited by more than 2500 thousand people, it is thought to be very severe and unapproachable. In terms of technical skills it is quite complicated for ascending, that’s why it’s advisable for inexperienced mountain climbers to ascend it under the guidance of sophisticated guides.
The tourists are taken to walking tours to Belukha. The starting point of the itinerary as a rule is Tyungur village.
