The southern Urals may get a new forest-steppe reserve

In the south of the Shaytan-Tau Range, which is located at the border of Bashkiriya and Orenburg Region, Orenburg department of Russian Geographical Society sets forth an idea to create a new forest-steppe reserve of 10 thous. sq. ha.

It is vitally important to preserve the ecosystem of the Shaytan-Tau Range. Scientists think that even a slightest external impact on the range ecosystem may cause extinction of a big number of rare, endemic and relict animals and plants.

The Shaytan-Tau Range is the south-eastmost line of flora area of European broad-leaved woodlands. There are seven types of forests. The purity of its water is testified by the fact that the highland brooks house trout and European grayling – ichthyic fauna species listed in Red Book of Russia, which are considered to be indicators of clean water.  It is one of the rarest nooks of the southern Urals staying off the man’s industrial activity.
