RATA-News № 631 from September 26, 2002 "Flower Carpets of Granny Katya"

14.05.2009

After that all crowded a cart with harned horse in it, and we were solemnly given a ride along the village streets. Don't forget, that it was raining, but "Paradise" provided each of the tourists with the raincoat.
The group had a first stop at the house of granny Katya who invited everybody to the hall. We entered and freezed from astonishment. Floors, walls, sofa, armchairs - all was in bright happy colors. It turned out that these carpets are hand weaved by the hostess of the house. Granny Katya is 82 years old, and almost the whole life she created carpets from the woolen and cotton threads. When there's an opportunity, the village authorities help her with the raw materials, and when there's no such opportunity, she uses the "secondary raw materials": she uses the old wool clothes that the country people give her. When we arrived, a symbolic event happened: granny Katya sold the tourists two carpets, that she has never did before. She usually knitted clothes for sale, and she just granted carpets - to relatives and country people. Of course, there were those who wanted to buy a carpet in every travel group of "Paradise" that visited this house, the foreigners offered much money, but granny Katya never agreed. She was forced by the hardship to betray her principles: soon there was winter and the house needed a repair, and she had to stock up coal. When our tourists heard about this, they bought out all her mittens-socks, and also a table cloth knitted with a needle of manual work
Then the group headed to a house of more than 100 years old. The hosts, married couple, played balalaika and bayan for us, sang chastooshkas and even showed a couple of traditional Siberian dances - of course, attracting the guests to join them. By the way, they sing so together already 50 years together. And after that Galina Demyanova invited all at her place for a farewell entertainment. It was called "tea drinking", but how can any tea drinking in Siberia be without home-brew! That's why besides the herbs tea, home made jam and buns, we actively tasted strong drinks locally produced, eat lard and fantastic pickles. It can't be helped - Siberian tradition.
Frankly speaking, the group leaved Nizhniy Suetul with regrets. Then we didn't know that so many interesting things wait us ahead.

To be continued.
