Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station

Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station is the most powerful station in Russia (6.4 million kilowatt). It is situated on the river Yenisei near Sayanogorsk town. Sayano-Shushenskaya dumb which was built in 1987 is called the most durable dumb in the world as it can resist 18 million tons. Its height is 245 meters, the length of the upper part is 1070 meters, of the low part - 110 meters. The width is 25 meters. Hydroelectric power station dumb forms a water basin of 31.34 cubic kilometers. Its area is 621 square kilometers. 35.6 thousand of hectares were submerged and 2717 buildings changed their location during the period of building the station.

Sayano-Shushensky biosphere nature reserve is situated near the hydroelectric power station. Clean water which is constantly renewed from the large water basin allows to keep trout farms here, as trout lives only in clean water.

Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station is the biggest in Russia and the second biggest in the world except the Chinese hydroelectric power station San xia (Three valleys).

Sayano-Shushenskaya station is a very popular place among tourists. There is a Museum of hydroelectric power station building which can be visited if you make an order in advance. There are also special watching places from where everyone can enjoy picturesque views of the station and of the water basin.
