Chatkhan is a Khakassian folk stringed plucked musical instrument, belonging to the family of zithers. It is a long rectangular box with strings strung along. Former chatkhan had only 3-4 strings woven from horsehair.
Chatkhan is the most popular old instrument, in the past it sounded almost in every Khakassian yurt. It is played with fingers of the right hand - pinch and click. The left hand helps only when a musician needs to improve its basic sound of a semitone or tone by clicking on string from the nut in order to obtain an intermediate tone between tones of strings of the instruments.
