Eastern Siberia

Eastern Siberia affects by its size. It starts from the Yenisei River to the East, incl. Trans-Baikal region, Yakutia, Taymyr Peninsula, Severnaya Zemlya and New Siberian Islands. Most of the territory is occupied by the Central Siberian Plateau; on the North there is tundra and permafrost, and in the south - steppes and mountain ranges of the Western and Eastern Sayan. The length of the Eastern Siberia from north to south is about 3 thousand kilometers. In the south it borders on Mongolia and China. The northernmost point is Cape Chelyuskin.

The total area is 7.2 million square kilometers (43% of the Russian Federation).
Population is about 9 million people (As for 2010).
In general, Eastern Siberia is characterized by low population density. In general, the population is concentrated in the southern part of the region, along the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Eastern Siberia includes the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Buryatia, Tuva, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk and Chita regions.
Largest cities: Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Chita, Bratsk. Krasnoyarsk is the only million-plus city in Eastern Siberia.

Eastern Siberia was attached to the Russian state in the 17th-18th centuries.

The economy of Eastern Siberia is based on non-ferrous metals. It produces 1/3 of Russian non-ferrous metals. First of all, it is aluminum (3/4 of Russian production), as well as nickel and copper. In addition, the Eastern Siberia is one of the major gold mining regions. In Yakutia there is the largest Russian diamond deposit. The region has several hydroelectric power stations - Sayano-Shushenskaya and Krasnoyarsk dam on the Yenisei, as well as Bratsk, Ust-Ilim and Irkutsk on the Angara.

The indigenous population of Eastern Siberia has Mongoloid features (Yakuts, Evenk, Nenets, Buryat, Tuvan and others). Their representatives are characterized by a flat face with high cheekbones, Kirghiz eyes, a small nose, dark straight hair. They are reindeer herders, hunters for fur-bearing animals, fishermen. Some indigenous people live not a nomadic, but sedentary lifestyle now.

Tourists “pearls” of the region to be considered the lake Baikal, Putorana plateau, nature reserve Stolby and national park Lena pillars.
