A stockaded town near Krasniy Yar was erected in August 1628. The Cossacks of a voevode Andrew Dubensky made a long way along Yenisei river before they paid attention to the place of where Yenisei and Kacha join their waters. They were amazed by the beauty of the place - there are mountains, taiga and steppe.

In summer 1628 the Cossacks began to build the town on a high cape situated between Yenisei and Kacha rivers.

The Krasnoyarsk stockaded town is a military town. It defended Yeniseisk, Tomsk and the Russian settlements from Mongolian and Turk tribes. It also played an important role in the process of joining Siberia and Russia. Krasnoyarsk was a defending fortress approximately 100 years. It was never conquered by the enemy, although some assaults lasted for months. It was surrounded by a deep ditch (depth - 3 meters, width - 10 meters). On the bottom of the ditch there were sharp stakes. A watch tower was built on the highest point of Kum-Tigei mountain in order to warn the citizens about the danger. Later this place was called Karaulnaya mountain. In XIX century a chapel of Praskeva Pyatnitsa was built there. After Siberia joined Russia Krasnoyarsk lost its military purpose. In 1690 it got the status of a town.

Today this place is one of the main historical symbols of Krasnoyarsk which everyone can see depicted on a ten rubles banknote.

In 1822 Krasnoyarsk became the centre of Yeniseiskaya province what was the new stimulus of the town's development.
