Tunguska event

On the 30th of June in 1908 an enormous sphere fell on the territory of Central Siberia, near Lower Tunguska and Lena rivers. Its flight was accompanied by sounds and light. Finally the sphere exploded causing the falling of taiga trees between Kimchu and Hushmo rivers - the tributaries of Podkamennaya Tunguska. The sphere exploded 5 or 10 kilometers high from the ground at 07.14 a.m. It also caused air wave and earthquake.

That is how the story of Tunguska event began. It is still a big mystery which stays unrevealed for 100 years.

One of the first researches of Tunguska event was a famous scientist Leonid Kulik who came to Vanavara in 1927. He had two assistants who helped him find a large basin surrounded by the hills which were covered by fallen trees. In the centre of the basin there was a forest of dead trees which didn't have branches and tops. The trees and bushes were burnt. He also found dozens of flat craters up to 50 meters in diameter.

In spite many evidences of the sphere's falling nobody could find its remnants. What more, the nature of Tunguska event also wasn't defined. This fact was the reason of numerous hypothesizes: meteorite falling, comets' rain, laser assault, space ship falling, volcanic eruption, a laser signal sent by another civilization etc.

In June 2008 Tunguska event celebrated its 100 anniversary. The museum under the open sky was opened to commemorate this date. The museum's collection includes old things, photos and books which belonged to Evenkia local people.
