Yurt

A yurt is a unique nomadic mobile house in Asia. The khakasian yurt was a round framed or trellis yurt covered with birch bark or felt. From the second half of the 19th century the Khakasians started to build timber yurts.

The base of a mobile yurt was framed parts of the wall. Their number varied from 4 to 8. Every part was made of crossed wooden sticks connected with each other by leather belts. This construction can be narrowed and widened; its height and diameter could vary. The roof was formed by long poles connected to the upper part of the frame. The top of the roof wasn't covered by anything. It was used as a smoke hole (70-80 cm in diameter). A door of a yurt was usually made of wood, birch bark and felt. It was traditionally situated in the eastern part of a yurt.

Inside the yurt was divided into 2 parts - a man's part (southern) and a woman's part (northern). There was a fire place made of stones in the centre of a yurt. There was also a cauldron hanging on a tripod over the fire.

There is a famous yurt complex "Kyug" situated in Khakasia, in Askiz district near Kazanovka village. Although the yurts seem to be not very big 2 or 3 people can comfortably live in one yurt. The yurts are very warm and cozy, but in spite of this you can feel a real nomad living in such a yurt.
