Sights

The rich variety of nature landscapes attracts a lot of tourists to Kuragino from all over Russia.

This place is perfect for fishing, hunting, rafting, gathering mushrooms, wild berries, herbs and roots, for having rest on sandy and stone beaches of lakes and rivers.

The lovers of alpinism and speleology are amazed by the region's unique geographical position. One can see there forest-steppe of Minusinsk basin, taiga and mountain taiga zone of the East Sayan mountains and a part of the West Sayan mountains on the border with Tuva Republic.

The biggest rivers of Kuraginsky district are Tuba, Sisim, Kazyr, Kizir, Amyl. Kuraginsky district is rich in mountain taiga lakes. The largest of them are situated between Kazyr and Kizir: Tiberkul, Tagasuk, Mozharskoe, Semenovskoe, Varlaama and others.

There are two splendid waterfalls situated in Kuraginsky district -
Kinzeluksky waterfall (400 meters, one of the highest waterfalls in Russia) and Shindinsky waterfall (30 meters). There are also other unique natural formations - caves. The most famous are Dzhenskaya and Lysanskaya.

Long time ago the territory of Kuragino was inhabited by different tribes and peoples: Samoyedic peoples, yenisei Kyrgyz, Khakas people, the Mongols and others. This fact was proved by archaeological dig and burial mounds. One of the famous proofs is Shalobolinskaya pisanitsa.

The old village of Kuragino was founded in 1626 on the river Tuba. The legend says after the duke of Tubinsky region Kuraga. The duke is famous for signing the document about joining with Russia in 1709 and for accepting of Orthodox religion. After that Kuragino village began to be constantly inhabited by the Russians.

In the middle of XVIII century an orthodox wooden church was built in Kuragino. Later it was changed for the stone church which working until the 1930ies.

Present Kuragino village has a library of a country style which was built in 1867. There were about 100 books in the library. Teachers and active citizens of the village performed plays and spectacles there.

The local people were mainly occupied by farming, cattle breeding and fishing. Every Sunday the peasants of the village gathered on the market place and sold all the natural products like meat, fish, butter, potatoes, cereals etc. Taiga people sold wooden crockery, barrels, boxes, honey and nuts.

In 1950-60ies a railroad was constructed in Kuragino.

The sightseeing of the village are: the regional museum, the wooden house on Tyutcheva street, the monuments for the Decembrist Tyutchev and the USSR hero Petryaev, the monuments for the soldiers who died during the Great Civil war, the memorial for the victims of political repressions, Troitskaya stone church with the remains of unique frescoes (in Shalobolino village), Kurganchikovskie steles of VII-II century B.C., the Temple of Ascension built in 1840 in Kochergino village.

The unique sightseeing place of Kuragino village is The city of the Sun - the settlement of the last church covenant situated on Suhaya mountain near Tiberkul lake. The head of the city is Vissarion. All the pilgrims are provided by living places in the nearest villages of Cheremshanka, Gulyaevka, Zharovsk, Tiberkul. People come here to listen to the sermons of the Teacher and to see the works of the city dwellers.
