The Kansk Museum of Local Lore

In 1912, a local historian Dmitry Kargopolov founded the first private museum in Kansk. His personal collections formed the basis of the museum. The most interesting were the materials of local archeology, paleontology, copper works of Russian art casting - icons, crosses, numismatics. By 1922 the museum's collections amounted to 6400 units. Since 2001 the Museum is located in one of the most beautiful town buildings on Moscovskaya st, where in the beginning of 20th century the cinematography Furore was located. Today, the archive contains more than 30 thousand objects. A clear illustration of Kansk history is an ethnographic collection. The biggest collection of the museum is the collection of the written documents from the end of the 18th century to this day, as well as manuscripts and early printed books. A unique collection of paintings and graphic art in the department of fine arts. The most valuable object of the fund are the icons received after the closing town temples and acquired by the museum from private individuals.
