Collection of seed Russian Institute of Plant, which began to collect another academician Nikolai Vavilov, and which today is the most comprehensive in the world, international experts estimate to 8 billion rubles. The approximate estimated cost of the first stage permafrost repository in Yakutsk - 10.6 million. Repository is built on a 10-meter depth, the thickness of the permafrost, where the preserved natural temperature of minus 6-10 degrees Celsius, which, according to scientists of the SB RAS, is sufficient for the preservation and seeds, and even of entire plants. For example, in 1977-1978 in the mine the Permafrost Institute (IMZ) of the SB RAS. Melnikov at a depth of 12 meters was launched experiment in long-term storage of seeds of legumes from the collection of VIR, using only natural cold permafrost. Now there are stores about 11 000 samples, which after 30 years of storage, keep 90 - and even 100 per cent germination. The technology is patented and the Institute will be used in the Yakut store that is just built on top of old mine IMZ. Over time, the organizers intend to bring the collection to the size of the Yakut 600-700 thousand accessions, which involves construction and second line storage.
