Moscow may become visa-free for tourists

16.07.2012

Moscow Government promotes short-term visa-free regime in the capital for foreign guests, as it was stated by the head of the city's International Contacts Department, Sergei Cheryomin.

"We are sure that visa-free regime could probably become the biggest advantage for Moscow. Our city is a huge transit hub from east to west. Our researching show that economic profit from the visa-free introduction only for three days will be nearly 120 billion rubles to the city's budget", he said.

According to him, such measures will give a substantial increase of foreigners' transit trough Moscow. "Many people will decide to stay in Moscow for a couple of days on their way from London to Tokyo, for instance. We expect an expansive growth of business trips", Cheryomin said. He also mentioned the probable increase of tourists flow to Moscow.

The idea of a visa-free regime in Moscow is supported by the majority of officials. However, there is still a concern from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security services about criminal situation in the visa-free city.

Sergei Cheryomin is sure that introduction of the visa-free regime won't become a cause of the influx of criminals from all over the world.
