Seals from Baikal are on-line

04.03.2010

Now the visitors of Baikal Museum in Irkutsk can observe the life and behavior of Baikal seal which is called “nerpa” on-line.

In one of the unpopulated irelands video cameras were installed just in the places of seal rookery. So that visitors in the museum can see the white-snow animals on a big screen. The project is planned to be brought into operation this summer. The money for the project was taken from the All-Russian contest “The changing museum in the changing world”, where the museum got the grant.

“The seal of Baikal Lake is the only representative of mammals in the deepest fresh lake on the planet, it’s a rather cautious animal and doesn’t allow to approach to itself, that’s why the animal, and to be exact the behavior of seal under water and on the land, is an object of interest for science”, tells the head of the museum. Assembly operations are carried out “in secrecy” from seals in order not to frighten the animal.

This is the second interactive exposition in Baikal Museum. The first one was started up three years ago when a video camera in a shape of deep water machine was plunged into a lake and which transmits the video and the sound, making an illusion of diving at the bottom of Baikal Lake
