The second finishing part of the international research expedition which was supported by the Fund of Baikal lake and the administration of Irkutsk district and Buryatiya republic started today. Now scientists are searching for places of clathrate hydrates - a potential source of fuel and energy for next generations.
Baikal is the only place on Earth where these substances are found in big quantities. The task of the scientists is to invent the technology of mining. The last year expedition on Baikal has already tried to model different variants of mining clathrate hydrates.
As for oil, its quantity is also very big in Baikal. But it is not planned to be produced.
The scientists are continuing to monitor the ecosystem of Baikal and to gather material about tectonic processes on the bottom of the lake.
