The reserve is situated on the southern slope of the Katunsky Mountain Range in the central part of Altai Republic.

Officially it was established July 25, 1991 with the aim to preserve the unique nature complex of Central Altai, although the idea appeared in XX century. It was included in the list of the world nature heritage in 1998.

The reserve is the centre of present freezing, so there is a great number of glaciers, rocky cliffs, mountain streams with waterfalls and small lakes. Flora and fauna can amaze you with its biodiversity. There are about 700 kinds of plants, 22 of which are registered in Red Book of Russia and Altai Republic. 51 kinds of mammals, 140 kinds of birds, 3 of reptiles and 8 of fish can be also seen there.

The so-called “beginning” of Katunsky Preserve is in Ust-Koksa Village – the main tourist itineraries take place from this place. By the way, the itineraries in the preserve are intended for people who like ecological or scientific and educational tours. The main routes are taken to Multinskie Lakes with visitation of waterfalls, the spurs of the Katunsky Mountain Range and mountain passes.

It is possible to have a family rest here. You can undertake the itinerary along the Multa River to Multinskie Lakes by snowmobiles.
