Chuya river

Chuya River is the right tributary of the Katun River, flows through the territory of the Republic of Altai. The length of 320 km. Source – Nameless Lake, Chikhachev Ridge (2931.1 m above sea level). Coordinates: 49.775361, 89.611670. Mouth - Katun River (approximately 744 meters above sea level), near the village Yinya. Coordinates: 50.396637, 86.673410. In its course the Chuya changes its name several times: Right Boguty, Boguty, Yustyt and finally Chuya. It flows through the Chuya steppe and then partially along the Chuysky tract to the west.

At the confluence of the Chuya and Katun there is an observation point where you can watch how two majestic mountain rivers merge together into a single channel, in which the white turbid water of the Chuya and turquoise water of the Katun flow for some time, without mixing. Muddy water of the Chuya is explained by glacial origin the river and its tributaries.

On the Chuya river some settlements are located: Kosh-Agach, Kurai and others.

At the source the Chuya is not-full-flowing, it spreads into numerous branches, the land is marshy. On the territory of Chuya steppe the river is calm. Then, starting from the mouth of the river Mazhoy, the Chuya becomes vibrant, a true mountain river with numerous rapids of varying difficulty, up to the 6th level. The river water temperature varies from +7 to + 13 ° C. The Chuya annually hosts various competitions on water tourism (Chuya rally and Mazhoy rally).

The valley of the Chuya has been inhabited by humans for a long time. This is evidenced by numerous finds, as well as burial mounds, steles and rock paintings (petroglyphs). The most famous petroglyphs are located in the area called Kalbak-Tash.
