Chuya Steppe

Chuya Steppe is located in the Altai mountains in Kosh-Agach district. The steppe is 70 km long and 10-40 km wide. The steppe is located on highlands, it’s mostly semi-deserts (1750-1850 meters a.s.l.), surrounded by many nature landmarks. From the north it is limited by the Kuraysky Mountain Range, from the west -  by North-Chuysky and South-Chuysky range. As for the eastern part, it is a natural borderline between Tuva and Altai, and finally southern edge is a frontier with Mongolia.

Winters are cold and windy here (-60 C). The river Chuya and its tributaries have a calm flow on the territory of Chuya steppe. There are many small salt lakes. It’s a peculiarity of the steppe, that it is the most droughty zone in the Altai mountains (only 150 mm of rain per year), that’s why there is no any lush greenery there. Among not numerous plants you can find sagebrush, feather grass, coach-grass and sedge. Around numerous lakes there is reed. Also it’s unique for alpine edelweiss.

As for the fauna of the steppe, it’s a natural place of habitat for many rare animals such as an antelope, a fox corsac and a cat manul. You can see cranes, swams, golden eagles and black vultures. It’s impossible to count how many rodents there are there – ground squirrels, marmots, jerboas, wall-creapers and hamsters.

Moreover, it’s a place where a great number of archeological monuments are concentrated. There are about 20 archeological sites of paleolith in the steppe, monuments of the Bronze and the Iron Ages, for instance, burial mounds, stone statues, rock paintings and even potter’s and iron making factory. The amount of rock paintings in Chuya steppe can be compared with the richest monuments of the ancient world art in the Sahara and the US Southwest.

In September 2014 in Chuya steppe, in the village Kosh-Agach, the first in Siberia and Russia's largest solar power plant was installed. According to observations by weather forecasters, this area is one of the sunniest places in Russia, because there are about 300 sunny days a year. The generating capacity is five megawatts, which is designed to cover the energy deficit of three districts of the Altai Republic - Kosh-Agach, Ulagan and Onguday. During the day, the station is able to meet the electricity demand of at least two of these areas.
