Scientists from paleontological museum from Ulyanovsk Region defined a new kind of ichthyosaurus, which was found in 2009 in Siberia. It was stated by the head of the museum Vladimir Efimov that the ancient sea pangolin can be referred to the new species.
According to the words of Efimov geologists found in North Siberia and sent to Ulyanovsk Region fragments of skull, the size of which is about a meter and a part of backbone. The age of the found is about 250 million years, informs RIA Novosti.
“It’s the first found of such an old pangolin in Russia. Earlier ichthyosaurus was found in North America and Thailand. In other words it’s a kind of discovery in the world of paleontology. It’s an interesting fact that it was found in a little-investigated from the point of view of paleontology territory, as there only petroleum and gas are produced”, informed Efimov.
”Today the scientists have anatomized the backbones of the pangolin. The species has been never found before, that’s why it hasn’t got the name. Usually the name is given according to the name of explorer”, clarifies the paleontologist.
When the process of preparation is finished, the bones of the pangolin will be sent to Krasnoyarsk Museum.
