Krasnoyarsk Biennale doesn’t look local at all because it has been designed according to classic international cannons: main project, exhibitions of parallel programme, art residences, summer school for young artists, public art, which penetrates into street space and city museums, film shows, contemporary dance and theatre, prizes which will be given away by international council of experts. Bienalles in Liverpool, Sharjah and Gwangju usually work the same way.
The oldest biennale of contemporary art in Russia was developed in mid 1990s on the basis of Krasnoyarsk Museum Centre by local museum team with Sergey Kovalevsy as the head of the project. Krasnoyarsk Biennale has shown by its example, that innovations in museum are connected with contemporary art, which in turn is able to modernize such a third rate Lenin’s memorial, eventually transforming it into an art-centre of new type. After 16 years of annual biennale Krasnoyarsk Museum Centre became a recognizable culture institute in Russia, provided that they have their own collection of pieces of contemporary art, they work with young artists all the time and they managed to gain the visitors respect and interest. Biennale is open for visits from 2 of September to 6th of November 2011.
