Polar bear reservation

07.09.2009

In Taimyr scientists will evaluate the work which had been done to preserve the population of white polar bears.

From 8th till 15th of September a group of environmental scientists will work in Taimyr. They will evaluate the work which had been doing to preserve the population of white polar bears in this region and appraise development prospects of protected nature areas in the north of Krasnoyarsk Territory.

This expedition will include specialists from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) of Russia, All-Russian Institute of environment conservancy, Ecology and Evolution Institute, Russian Academy of science and the staff of the nature reserve “Great Arctic”. Their aim is to evaluate the work which had been doing in this region to preserve the population of polar bears and other aquatic mammals. The second aim is to consider development prospects of protected nature areas.

The white polar bear is the world’s largest carnivore species found on land. A global population of polar bears is about 20000-25000 species, 5000-7000 of them live in Russian Arctic. The closest to Krasnoyarsk Territory population of polar bears-Kara sea species-is estimated about 5000-7000 species. Taimyr plays strategical role in preservation of polar bears: Dickson (Township) Island is imperative in monitoring of populations because it is the only inhabited locality in the north of Taimyr which is regularly visited by bears and where poaching is regularly registered. Moreover according to the WWF’s specialists’ research, it is Taimyr that can be refuge for polar bears when the process of ice melting in Arctic will become more active. According to the most hopeful prognosis the population of this specie can thin on two thirds to 2050 year and according to the doom-laden prognosis this specie will almost become extinct.
