The scientists began working on the results of “Mirs” on Baikal

25.06.2009

The scientists began to work on the first results which were revealed from the samples of the bottom of Baikal lake, taken by the deep water devices "Mir 1" and "Mir 2" in 2009. This was announced by the scientist of the Irkutsk institution, the doctor of biology Tamara Zemskaya.

The results will allow to find out what changes happened in different parts of the lake in comparison with 2008 or earlier periods.

During every submersion the samples of the bottom are taken. Then they are examined for the chemical analysis, for biological analysis and for gas structure. These types of analyses are the standard which will be applied in every part of the lake.

She also mentioned that the analysis is in its first stage now as the samples are just being chosen. The expedition of "Mir" deep water devices can solve many problems. Different institutions are taking part in it. Every of them had its own specific aim. Then there will be a meeting where the scientists will sum up the first results.

The expedition started in 2008. During the summer the devices "Mir 1" and "Mir 2" examined the lake for new flora and fauna, submerged to the deepest place of the lake in the central part near Olkhon island. The depth there is 1,6 thousand meters.

The first submergences in the south of Baikal will be held near Tolsty cape. Later the expedition will move to the north. In July the scientists plan to work in the central part of the lake, in August - in the northern part.

The expedition will also monitor the ecosystem of the lake, its animal and floral world, mud volcanoes and thermal water places. Besides, the scientists will get precise information about tectonic processes on the bottom of Baikal.
