Evenk New Year is an unforgettable and unique holiday, which is perfect for real adventure lovers! A long and harsh winter, hot summer days, colorful wildlife, local people busy as a bee and living in a harmony with nature. With no doubts Evenkia region is being called the heart of the Siberian North!

It’s better to start getting acquaintance with this region taking part in celebration of Evenk New Year, which is annually held in the beginning of June!

New Year celebration in June proves the harmony life of local people and nature one more time.

The origin of celebration is centuries old and gains significance because of traditions and culture of people of North. In the beginning of June larch leaves are out, the snow melted away, the nature is awake after long dream, rivers and streams flow their water again, sunbeams are getting hotter, and people have strengths for new achievements. And that all became the best reason to celebrate!

This holiday is full of traditions of Evenk people such as traditional ceremonies, shaman kamlaniye, national dishes, master class of making national ornaments and amulets.

Day 1. Meeting Evenkia

Flight from Krasnoyarsk to the North, to Tura town, main settlement of Evenkia land.
Check-in to a local hotel.
Excursion in the Local Lore Museum, where you learn the history of Evenkia and get to know about the customs of the indigenous people of the North - the Evenks and the Yessey Yakuts.

After short rest you will visit the Local Lore Museum, where you learn the history of Evenkia and get to know about the customs of indigenous people of the North. There are a lot of unique exhibits, which represent ideology, ethnographic richness, culture, way of life and history of local people such as the Evenks, the Yessey Yakuts and the Ket (only 300 these people left to live all around the world)

The collection of museum holds many unique objects: natural science and archaeological room (habit, old women's jewelry, ornaments for team of deer, Evenk calendars, musical instruments made of wood, bone, metal), religion room (shaman clothes, diamonds, charms), a collection of coins, arts and crafts (stuff made of birch bark, bone, fur appliqué, embroidery of beads), art room, documentary materials and personal belongings of outstanding Evenk people.

Day 2. New Year Celebration

Celebration of Evenk New Year! It's called by locals "Muchun".
It takes place outdoors in the forest.
During the holiday you will:
- see the reindeer and national houses of tribal communities - chums
- taste national food
- enjoy a folk concert
- take part in master classes
- participate in the national sports games
- be part of traditional Evenk rites of purification and presenting gifts to the spirits of nature

Today we will be a part of Evenk New Year celebration!

Evenk holiday Muchun takes place outdoors. The place of celebration underlines the spirit and ancient roots of this event. Right on the grass there are a lot of chums (chum is a raw-hide tent) belonging to kinship communities, representatives of educational, cultural, industrial communities.

This day is full of events. You have a possibility:

-to taste national dishes

-to see the exhibition of arts and crafts

-to take part in master classes

-to see reindeers

-to take part in national sports games (national wrestling, jumping, archery and others)

The main feature of Evenk New Year is a demonstration of ancient Evenk rites, which traditionally were performed as a part of the Muchun. Assisted by the members of Evenk folk group, anybody who wants can go through purification rite Ikenipke, which holds 6 levels. Then follow the fumigation rite Kurekan (deer fencing) and ritual offering gifts to alfar. In the interior rites, the guests will be presented concert program with songs, dances, themed sketches demonstrating Evenk national clothes.

Day 3. Diving into the life of reindeer-breeders

Today you will travel by speed boat along the Nizhnyaya Tunguska river to the camp of reindeer-breeders. Overnight in real Evenk chums - raw-hide tents, covering by animal skins (in the winter) and birchbark (in the summer).
Next two days will be out of civilization, only the wilds and you. It will be diving into way of life of indigenous people of the North. Also you will learn some tips how to survive in the harsh Siberian taiga.
You will see how national North dishes are usually cooked.
The bravest can even do deer milking.
In the evening you will enjoy amazing sounds of traditional musical instrument of Evenk people – vargan.

Full day program

Today you will shoot the rapids along the beautiful Nizhnyaya Tunguska river (by a speed boat) until reaching a camp of reindeer-breeders. This journey must became some kind of “Back to the Origins”. Next two days will be out of civilization, only the wilds and you.

During this short trip, the group will delve into way of life of indigenous small-numbered people of the North, who live in the territory of Evenkia. Also you will learn some tips how to survive in the harsh Siberian taiga, e.g. food storage, fire making, water and food production.

Upon arrival you will see how national North dishes are usually cooked. You will taste blood soup, Evenk cake, taiga soup, herbal tea. After lunch guided by an experienced reindeer-breeders, you will visit the place near the Nidymkan body river, where deer graze. Here you will be taught how to handle reindeers, throw maut, and the bravest can even do deer milking.

In the evening bonfire you will enjoy amazing sounds of traditional musical instrument of Evenk people – vargan.

And the last impression for today is overnight at national Evenk housing - a chum. It is a raw-hide tent, covering by animal skins (in the winter time) and birchbark (in the summer). A fireplace is located in the center of chum, the floor is covered by fir branches and deerskin.

Day 4. Traditions of hunting and fishing

Today is a day of North traditions of hunting and fishing.
Departure by a boat to visit the hut of a hunter.
You can fish if you want it.
The lunch will be cooked of caught fish on the fire.
Go back to the camp of reindeer-breeder.
In the evening experience with taking taiga banya.

Today is a day of North traditions of hunting and fishing.

Evenk principle economy combines three branches of activity: hunting, reindeer breeding, fisheries. During the spring and until Autumn Evenk people do fishery, and in the winter they were engaged in hunting. Hunting was a very important for people: trophies used as food, clothes and for housing building, also trophies were the main good in the exchange with other people.

You can fish if you want it.

The lunch will be cooked caught fish on the fire.

Spend some time outdoors.

Go back to the camp of reindeer-breeders.

In the evening experience with taking taiga banya, where you will feel the secrets of longevity and strong Siberian health.

Day 5. Back to civilization

Coming back to Tura town by speed boat along the Nizhnyaya Tunguska river.
After lunch you will take part in master class of making national ornaments and amulets. You will make a famous souvenir – kumalan – “North Sun”, the symbol of how welcoming Evenk people are.

Event tour Muchun holiday – Evenk New Year (6 days/5 nights) route goes along territories of Krasnoyarsk region and Evenkia.

Region

Krasnoyarsk region is located in the eastern part of Siberia along the basin of the Yenisei river. It covers 3000 km from the South to the North, where it is washed by Kara sea and Laptevs’ sea. The population of the region is about 3 million people.

The region is subdivided into three climate zones: arctic, subarctic and mild.

Krasnoyarsk region territory is the domain for 450 species of plants, 340 species of birds and 90 species of animals including snow leopard, Putorana bighorn sheep, snow fox, stoat and musk-ox. In region there are 6 nature reserves under state protection: Great Arctic, Central-Siberian, Putorana, Stolby (Rock pillars), Sayano-Shushensky and Taimyr reserves.

Today administrative-territorial status of Evenkia is district within Krasnoyarsk region, Russia. In 2007 together with Taymyr Autonomous Okrug Evenkia became a part of Krasnoyarsk region. Before that Evenkia was a separate federal subject of Russia with its own government and parliament.

99% of Evenkia is covered by untouched, primeval impassable taiga with lots of big and small rivers, the best-known of them are Nizhnyaya and Podkamennaya Tunguska, Ilimpeya, Khatanga. Green tract of taiga is generously decorated with lakes like Lake Yessey, Lake Vivi which is a geographical centre of Russia, with Central siberian State Nature Biosphere Reserve with bald mountains which have famous granitic evenk pillars on top. The Putorana Plateau is a “crown” of local nature and a highland of unique animals, unusual flora and waterfalls.

How to get

The tour starts in Tura.

You can reach Tura (the capital of Evenkia) only by a plane of following airlines KrasAvia or Nordstar. Travel time is 2 hrs 50 minutes.

Meeting and seeing off

Group transfers from/to airport are organized at fixed time. Tourists are met with a board, where tourist’s name or a name of a company is printed. Upon arrival you can ask a guide all the particular questions on spot.

Recommended personal equipment:

Climate in Evenkia is distinctly continental, some part of the tour goes behind the Polar Circle. Please, keep in mind possible weather changes. We highly recommend to take the following personal equipment:
- fishing tackle/ fishing tackle + fishing kit
- waders, comfortable shoes for outdoor activities
- warm clothes (sweater, jacket, trousers)

- clothes for change (it should be packed into watertight bag)

Accommodation

Gostiny dvor Hotel

The Gostiny dvor is located in the center of urban-type village Tura. There are shops, museum, recreation center, cafeteria near the hotel. 20-25 minutes away from the airport. Accommodation during the tour in comfort rooms: 2 single beds, wardrobe, TV-set, telephone, kettle, fridge, bedside tables, desk. Shared shower and WC. Accommodation in a double room is also possible.

Chum

A chum is a raw-hide tent, covering by animal skins (in a winter time) and birchbark (in the simmer). A fireplace is located in the center of chum, the floor is covered by fir branches and deerskin. If you need there are also sleeping bags in there to make you feel comfortable. There are no facilities in the chum and around.

Meals

During all the tour you will be offered three meals a day. Alcohol drinks are not included in the price. During staying at a camp of reindeer-breeder, the guides are charge of cook. If you want you can hook a fish and cook it by yourself.

We can also take into consideration the tourists' preferences in dietary or vegetarian food as far as possible. In order to have it during the tour, you should fill in the questionnaire about peculiarities in food and send it to us in advance. In case you don’t complete it, you will be provided with standard European food with elements of national cuisine. Changing of menu during the tour is possible only for extra pay.

Security

All vehicles along the route are equipped with first-aid kit and all our guides have been specially trained to do primary medical assistance. Also all our tourists are insured against accidents. Mobile phones

The cellular network coverage is available only in Tura. Mobile phones operated by local operators (MTS, Beeline, Megafon, Tele2) are working alright. But the quality of mobile communications is not very good. There is no mobile connection in camp of reindeer-breeders.

Transportation

Comfortable buses and minivans and speed boats will be used during this tour.

NB! A maximum weight of personal stuff per one person must be not more than 20 kilograms.

Guide services

We have highly qualified guides working in our company, due to this fact the tours of the company Sayan Ring have become so interesting and fascinating. They say, without a guide any journey, even a short one is nothing more than going some distance, but with a guide it is already traveling. The Russian speaking guide is included in the tour price, interpreter to English, German or other languages is to be paid extra.

Ticks

In Evenkia there are almost no ticks, a chance of being attacked by ticks (or even catch Lyme disease) is minimum in taiga. But for any case we recommend to take safe measures.

Water

Water provided during the tour is clear and doesn’t need any additional purification. You will be given water for drinking, that’s why there will be no need in taking water with you.

Safety instructions

- It is strictly forbidden to travel by boat, boating and participate in the routes with alcohol intoxication;

- Tourist bears the financial responsibility in case of intentional infliction of harm to the firm or in the case of violation of safety regulations;

- Tourist is obliged to behave respectfully towards the local people and to protect nature.

We do not recommend participating in the tour to:

-people who have diseases of the central nervous system;

-people in need of constant medical supervision.
