Tour description

Tun Payram is an ancient Khakassian celebration, which is celebrated every second year, coinciding it with the Republic Day (can be combined with celebrations in Abakan)

Tun Payram is the time of first ‘big milk’ appearing from new, green grass, grown this year. As the basis of Kakassian food is milk, it has always been esteemed. Approximately at the end of June there were first milk products, people made first ayran – a sour drink from refermented cow milk. At the same time new national dresses were being sewn. There is a tradition when people from a few aals gathered together on a nearest mountain top, made a huge fire and performed special rituals. A specially honored man sprinkled cattle and fire with ayran, bless the sky and land, and wishes cattle and milk products not to finish.

After the ritual part, people participate in competitions to show their strength and dexterity. Archery, horse races (charys) and stone lifting (hapchan tas) are very popular among Khakasses.

Fighting (kures) is also very popular. It is carried according to special rules. First lightweight start, then heavyweight continue. During this fight, the competitors should not take their hands off the opponent’s belt (khur). The fight has two rounds and continues till there is a winner in each category. After the fight everybody is treated with ayran.

All the elements of this national holiday are preserved and are shown to guests every year. All the guests are met in a yurt and treated with national cuisine. Then national ceremonies, sport competitions, theatrical shows, a concert with national groups of Khakassia, Mountain Altai and Mountain Shoriya take place. Masters of decorative and applied arts show clay, wood, cloth, beads and stone handicrafts to competitors and guests. Everyone has a chance to get acquainted with cultural traditions of Khakassian people.

Date of the event: the event takes place in 2 forms: every second year for adults (3 days in end June-beginning July, e.g. 01-03.07.2016, Friday-Sunday) and every another second year for kids (1 day, in May-June, e.g. 21.05.2014). Every celebration is worth to visit. In 2015 the celebration was cancelled due to fires in the region. In 2017 it's planned to celebrate Kids Tun Payram.
