The city is located in the Atlantic-Arctic temperate zone. Murmansk's climate is shaped by its proximity to the Barents Sea, which enhances the influence of the warm North Atlantic Current. This factor contributes to its distinctly different climate from that of other cities located above the Arctic Circle.

      Weather

The average January-February temperature in Murmansk is approximately -10 to -11°C. Severe frosts are rare, and thaws do occur. Due to the proximity of warm air masses carried by the Gulf Stream, the onset of cold weather in Murmansk typically occurs about a month later than in other northern regions. Murmansk has a monsoonal wind pattern: in winter, southerly winds from the mainland prevail, bringing dry, frosty weather to the city. In summer, northerly winds from the Barents Sea bring increased humidity and relatively cool summer weather to Murmansk. The wind pattern shifts around June and September.
Most of Murmansk's annual precipitation, approximately 500 mm, falls from June to September, with cloudy and precipitation peaking in August.
Snow covers the city for an average of 210 days, receding completely by May (in the city's outskirts snow can remain until June). Snowfalls in the first half of June are not uncommon. The minimum temperature of -39.4°C was recorded in Murmansk on January 6, 1985, and on January 27, 1999. The maximum temperature of +32.9°C was recorded on July 9, 1972. The polar night at Murmansk's latitude lasts from December 2 to January 11, and the polar day from May 22 to July 22.
