Barnaul
Nikolskaya Church

It is one of the youngest churches in Altai. The building of it was initiated in 1904 by 24 Siberian Regiment. This one-nave church was built in Pseudo-Russian style.
In 1906 it was sanctified. The church was very popular with city dwellers and military men and local holidays were celebrated in the square near it.
But in 30s in Russia there was a policy of destroying churches and cathedrals. So the bell was broken, the bell tower and the dome were annihilated and the building itself was given to the military unit of Barnaul Aviation College.
In 1992 everything resumed its normal course and its sacred status was returned to the Church of St. Nikolay. The church with tower bell were restored, so that now the tourists can admire this grand church.

Pokrovsky Cathedral

This Cathedral was built on money given by local dwellers. In 1898 the foundations of the first stone were laid. The Cathedral was built of red bricks in Byzantine style. In 1903 it was completed and in 1904 it was sanctified.
Soon after opening of the cathedral a parish school was established in Barnaul. Today you can also see this school - not a parish, but educational one.
In 1933 Pokrovsky Cathedral was closed. The major part of them was arrested, executed by shooting or exiled. The tower bell was destructed and the cross on the dome was demolished. But in 1942 the cathedral was open again and restoration began which lasted during several decades.
Today the cathedral looks renewed with wonderful wall paintings. Besides, in 1990 the tower bell was reconstructed.
