Barnaul

Barnaul Attractions include: the park Barnaul fortress, Drama Theatre named after Shukshin, monuments to writer Shukshin, poet Pushkin, musician Victor Tsoi, actor Charlie Chaplin, a monument to the Altai immigrants, sculpture of a street cleaner, sleeping cat, miserable lovers, Altai State Theatre of Musical Comedy, many monuments of architecture 18-20 centuries.


Nikolskaya Church

It is one of the youngest churches in Altai. The building of it was initiated in 1904 by 24 Siberian Regiment. This one-nave church was built in Pseudo-Russian style.

In 1906 it was sanctified. The church was very popular with city dwellers and military men and local holidays were celebrated in the square near it.

But in 30s in Russia there was a policy of destroying churches and cathedrals. So the bell was broken, the bell tower and the dome were annihilated and the building itself was given to the military unit of Barnaul Aviation College.

In 1992 everything resumed its normal course and its sacred status was returned to the Church of St. Nikolay. The church with tower bell were restored, so that now the tourists can admire this grand church.

Pokrovsky Cathedral

This Cathedral was built on money given by local dwellers. In 1898 the foundations of the first stone were laid. The Cathedral was built of red bricks in Byzantine style. In 1903 it was completed and in 1904 it was sanctified.

Soon after opening of the cathedral a parish school was established in Barnaul. Today you can also see this school - not a parish, but educational one.

In 1933 Pokrovsky Cathedral was closed. The major part of them was arrested, executed by shooting or exiled. The tower bell was destructed and the cross on the dome was demolished. But in 1942 the cathedral was open again and restoration began which lasted during several decades.

Today the cathedral looks renewed with wonderful wall paintings. Besides, in 1990 the tower bell was reconstructed.

Barnaul Belt Wood

Barnaul Belt Wood is the pine forest, which stretches like a narrow belt 550 km long, it starts in Barnaul surroundings close to Ob River and ends at the Irtysh River close Semipalatinsk city in Kazakhstan. The wood width varies, near Barnaul it is 8-10 km.

Scientists believe that belt forests are left after the Ice Age. The last glaciation happened about 10 thousand years ago. Streams of melted glacier water carried large amounts of sand. On the left sands pinewoods began to grow. As a result, now the hollows are covered by forests, and the space between them - by steppe vegetation.

The main type of trees in Barnaul belt wood is pine, as well as aspen, viburnum, mountain ash, bird cherry, raspberry, blackberry, hawthorn. In the summer and fall after the rains in the forest, you can find plenty of mushrooms (boletus, chanterelles, milk mushrooms, orange milk mushrooms, russula, honey fungus, butter mushrooms. There are squirrels, chipmunks, hares, foxes and many beavers that build huts in the streams. If the path you met hoofprints likely they belong to the wild goat, but maybe there was an elk.


New Bridge over the River Ob and the sign BARNAUL

The New bridge is a bridge across the Ob River in Barnaul, which connects the central city area and the right bank of the river. Crossing with a total length of 940 m consists of seven spans, bridge width - 32 m. Opened July 25, 1997. Two-way three-lane traffic provides throughput of more than 20 thousands vehicles per day.

The bridge across the Ob River is a must-see place. The bridge not only connects the two Ob banks, but became the official Barnaul business card, its symbol. The newlyweds come here to hang a "lock of happiness" on the railing and throw the key away in the water. Courting couples come here to admire the beauty of water. Graduates of schools and universities come here to see the sunrise. One can see famous large letters "Barnaul" on the hill from this bridge , the sign welcomes all visitors to the capital of the Altai. These white letters thought and built as an analogy of the famous inscription «Hollywood».


Sovetov Square and the Zero Kilometer Monument

Located in Barnaul city center Sovetov Square is the heart of the administrative life of the city.

It was designed even in 1937, but the plan has prevented by the II World War, the construction of the area began only in the 1950s.

The basis of the architectural ensemble was the regional administration. Before the beginning of the 1970s, the square became several houses with corner towers.

On the Sovetov Square there is one of the main attractions of the city - the Zero Kilometer. Opening of the "Zero kilometer" took place in November 2003, when the square, originally paved with a mosaic depicting the zodiacal circle and the wind rose, got the granite column 6 meters high. The column topped by a carved stone vase made by skilled craftsmen from Kolyvan stone-cutting factory. Since Barnaul has his own "official" starting point of kilometers from the capital to other settlements of Altai. It should be noted that before the installation of the sign the distances there were calculated from the Post Office building, but residents of Barnaul wanted to have a special symbol. This monument is especially fond by newlyweds - "Zero Kilometer" symbolizes the beginning of family life.

House Under the Spire

House under the spire on the October square is an officially recognized symbol of Barnaul, a historical monument. The building is made in the style of Soviet Neo-Classicism and was built in 1956. The famous 15-meter-long sharp spire with a weather vane crowned a tower with clocks that always show the exact time. The house with a spire is 46 meters high. A characteristic feature of the building is a decorative stone plaster with mica.

On the ground floor there is a shop that simply cannot be called otherwise than “a grocery store under the spire." Apartments, located on floors above, are characterized by an improved layout, rather pompously: high ceilings, large windows, separate rooms etc. Therefore, in the Soviet era the house was occupied by famous figures of culture, military, heroes of labor and party workers.
