In 1866 an iron and cast-iron Abakan plant began to work in this district. At that time a worker's village appeared there and was named Abakano-Zavodskoe. Some specialists think that the name Abaza was derived from the name Abakano-Zavodskoe. In 1966 Abaza got the status of a town. This town amazes its guests by its beauty: the town is surrounded by marvelous cedar forest which is included in the list of protected nature monuments. Besides there is also a big mountain Chalpan situated near the city. Living sector and administrative buildings are situated on a plateau near Abakan river. There are no old buildings in the town except a merchant's house of Kipreev which now is occupied by Abaza regional museum.

The cedar nursery forest is located near Sayan mountains and is the only one nursery forest in Russia. Nowadays it is an official federal supplier of cedar and blue fir.

Chalpan rock is a stone complex 147 meters high which reminds an animal fang. From the top of the rock you can see beautiful scenery of the town, Abakan river and cedar forest.

The Regional museum of Abaza is situated in an old house which was built in the end of the 19th century. In 1988 this house was proclaimed to be the historical monument of the town. All the exhibits of the museum are devoted to the town's history. The ethnographic exhibition represents the culture of Khakasian people of the 19th century.
